I respect Kareem Abdul-Jabaar, and I understand why its important for him to resolve the issue of Islamic terrorists in this way: time/3662152/kareem-abdul-jabbar-paris-charlie-hebdo-terrorist-attacks-are-not-about-religion/ However, his very example of the KKK actually counters his argument. Because, while Christians *today* arent necessarily obliged to make statements against a KKK attack, if this were 1950, they absolutely would be obligated. Why? Because not only did the KKK use Christianity to justify horrendous acts, but a large portion of the American Christian population of the time sort of shrugged at their actions, because their version of Christianity did not see the problem of the KKK as against their religious belief. A significant proportion of southern white Christians actually silently supported what the KKK was doing. Thus, Christian leadership of the time DID have an obligation to decry the KKKs actions at that time, and black Christians made a point of using religion to ask why they remained silent. Mr. Abdul-Jabaar is correct, however, when he points out that its more about money (and power) then it is about religion. That said, it still is important that prominent Muslims speak out about these acts simply because there are entire countries claiming to be Muslim who support them.
