I saw Dr. Gable today, vascular surgeon. He was evaluating the ABI test that showed decreased blood flow (Peripheral Artery Disease-PAD) in my lower left leg. I was convinced that the constriction of the compartment syndrome (that was diagnosed Nov. 8, 2013!) was responsible for the decreased blood flow, NOT PAD. Well, I guess I was wrong! Dr. Gable said that I have good blood flow sounds all over, except in my lower left leg, STARTING BEHIND THE KNEE! Which means the restriction starts ABOVE the left calf. So we are going to schedule an Arteriography, which is inserting a catheter in the groin and injecting dye into the suspected area. X-Rays will show the suspected blockage, and if it turns out to be as Dr. Gable expects, he will insert a stent in the area, and in a couple of days time I should be back to running!!!! Most of the usual causes of PAD are smoking, diabetes, inactive life style. When I questioned Dr. Gable about this, he said in many cases it is hereditary. Guess that’s me! So here I am, sipping a nice rum & coke celebrating what I think is finally a definitive diagnosis, with a “relatively” simple solution. I think it is less invasive than the fasciotomy (slicing of my calf) that would have to be done for compartment syndrome. So please all pray that this is a correct diagnosis and that the Arteriography & stend solves the problem and I can go back to my beloved running!
