I saw Jobs (the movie with Ashton Kutcher) with Lynn over the weekend, and we both liked it a lot. Today I took a look at the reviews and found to my surprise that the movie was not a critical success. The reasons given for the pan in most of the critical reviews seemed petty or simply wrong, in my opinion. One common theme, for example, was that the movie did not really "get anywhere near an understanding of what makes him tick." The unstated (and false) assumption behind this criticism is that most (or even many) historical biographical movies show us clearly "what makes him tick". Jobs was a complex person, with warts and deep wounds, who also played a large part in a cultural revolution (which probably would have happened, if differently and more slowly, without him). This movie helps us understand that.
