I saw UNDER THE SKIN Friday night. Let me start by saying that as of lately, Ive been extremely underwhelmed by the quality of film thats been put out over the past few years. Honestly, other than the excellent Grand Budapest Hotel, I cant even remember the last truly GREAT movie that I saw in theaters. Then I saw this movie...at first, I didnt know what to think about it. But after contemplating it for over a day now, the film is truly living up to its title. Everything about it is just amazing! From Mica Levis score to ScarJos performance...but the greatest talent here is Jonathan Glazers direction. Hes being compared to Stanley Kubrick, and thats a tall order for anyone, but in this case, it is certainly not without merit. It took him about 10 years to make this and everything he put into was certainly unlike anything Ive send in a LONG time. He takes the all of the eroticism, mystery and storytelling of a David Lynch film and shoots it with the minds eye of a Stanley Kubrick film. And thats a rare thing to do! Thats the best way I can think of as to describe it. In summary, UNDER THE SKIN is actually probably one of the more bold and original pieces of filmmaking of todays zeitgeist and that is perhaps the highest compliment I can give it.
