I saw a firefly last night. I haven’t seen one in years and this - TopicsExpress

I saw a firefly last night. I haven’t seen one in years and this one was just a flicker in the backyard as I tried to tame a dripping faucet. Alas, the faucet is still dripping, but my annoyance was lessened by that little flicker of light that reminded me of childhood. Weren’t there more fireflies 50 years ago? Even though they were a wonderment to me when I was 5, they weren’t the amazement they are now. I hadn’t seen one in years until last night. Fireflies also remind me of the Fourth of July so this lone electrical disturbance in my backyard was a timely reminder of sparklers and cap guns as we celebrate Independence Day. My dad wasn’t much for bottle rockets, but we always had sparklers. That was as much danger as this little kid had ever held with her own two hands and it always elicited a giddy combination of happiness and scariness to hold the sparkler until it burned down to my fidgety fingers. Dad also usually got us caps and, if he was feeling really generous, new cap guns. (We needed new ones every year because we managed to break the guns the first day they were given to us.) Even without the guns, we would take rocks and fire off rolls of caps all over the front sidewalk until it looked like tiny bombs had landed everywhere. Do they still sell caps and cap guns? Would it be as much fun now? Probably not. I think I’ll just go looking for more fireflies.
