I saw an advance squadron of Great Shearwaters (Puffinus Conceitedus) late yesterday afternoon, flying south. Each year these migratory birds travel an incredible 14,000kms from their breeding grounds in the northern hemisphere to the southern ocean and each year using only celestial cues from the sun and stars, the earth’s magnetic field and the bird in front of them, they return to the same area with uncanny precision. The change in season also means that garden snails will be preparing for hibernation by eating massive amounts of plant matter in an effort to store enough energy to last the entire summer. I hope the slimy pulmonate molluscs we have befriended this year have the same instincts and navigational abilities as their feathered cousins and delight us with their return following the first rain of winter.
