I saw an episode of Gun Smoke in which someone pulled a gun on Matt Dillon. Of course Matt being a careful man took his time to consider the situation. The man had a colt 45 pointed right at his chest so the first thing the martial had to consider was whether or not he really intended to shoot or was just joking. He had to think about whether or not the man had ever shot a law officer before. Matt did not have a tazer or bean bag gun but he still had some non lethal options. He could duck or maybe rush at the gunman in time to take the gun away. Maybe he could talk reasonable to the gunman and get him to become peaceful. Perhaps he could call Festus for help. Of course race had a part in the decision that the martial was very carefully weighing. He had to look carefully to see if the man pointing a colt 45 to his chest with his finger on the trigger was a member of a minority community. Oops! Too late. The martial was dead.
