I saw an interesting movie tonight called The Theory of Everything, about Stephen Hawking and his wife, Jane. It left me feeling empty, because as most of the world knows, Stephen is an atheist, but his wife Jane was (or at least called herself) a Christian. And for all their struggles, all the ways that they had to combat Stephens illness, not to mention all the other challenges that come with marriage and family life, what was the purpose? Hawking said, There can be no boundary to human endeavor. Where there is life, there is hope. But without Jesus, what did it mean? When Jane and Stephen realized that they could no longer make each other happy, they had no reason to stay together. Human endeavor, personal happiness, and whatever hope they derived from their lives simply wasnt sufficient to sustain their love. Laurie Irvine Shaw posted something a few weeks ago about the number one most important quality in a spouse: that they would be someone you want by your side in the trenches, someone who fights with you and for you, and someone who points you back to Jesus in the midst of the struggle. I couldnt help but imagine how differently the Hawkings story might have turned out if Jesus had been the covenant, the purpose, and the motive behind their love and their marriage. Their struggle would have taken on such a different meaning if Jesus was part of it.
