I saw the most fascinating program on NC history last night. Our Public TV carried the story of an archaeological dig in Morganton (between Asheville and Boone). It dates to the 14th century and is a Spanish settlement!!! It predates the Lost Colony and the exploration journey started on Paris Island, SC, where they are digging a site of a Spanish Fort with the same pottery and artifacts! Their journey of exploration appears to have gone up the Catawba River Valley from SC to the Blue Ridge Mountains. That takes it through Charlotte along the way. The NC story is just beginning to take shape when you go outside the oldest town of Bath where I live.
