I saw this come up on the news feeds in Facebook. The beauty of owning a gun is never having to use it to protect yourself. The very fact that you are armed is a great deterrent. The Violence Policy Center is by their own admission an anti-gun organization. It has been demonstrated time and again that they manipulate the data to suite their own ends. Do people really think that if a person really wants to commit suicide that not having a gun available will prevent them? For example, according to the World Health Organization’s data, Japan has a much higher rate of suicide than the United States. In 2011, Japan had the 7th highest suicide rate in the world, and the U.S. was number 38. A 1999 New York Times article on the high rate of suicide in Japan noted “Because gun ownership is severely restricted in Japan, many Japanese resort to throwing themselves in front of trains, hanging themselves, jumping off cliffs or overdosing, the police say.” With tongue firmly planted in cheek, on Criminal Gun Homicides if we were to back out all the gun crimes committed in Chicago, President Obama’s home town, we would be down in the low triple digits.
