I saw this hashtag #ThingsITellMyBlackSon on Fb in response to the Mike Brown tragedy and it really made me think. If I had a son I would teach him that staying alive will sometimes cost him his rights, pride and dignity and sometimes make him feel like a punk/less like a man. I would tell him to never draw attention to himself when hes out in public even if it means separating himself from his peers. I would tell him that every decision he makes with his movements, tone of voice, facial expressions and words when dealing with so called authoritative figures could cost him his life. As his mother I can build his ego back up after hes forced to bow down to ignorance but I can never bring him back to life.
