I see a lot of people post on here with the question of whether to cull or attempt to save in the event of extreme injury. I hardly ever post on blogs or forums, but sitting here with my girls Ive felt compelled to tell the story of my Bianca. Bianca is my RIR, who just turned 1 in may. On 6/28/14 we sustained a stray dog attack. Two Brittany spaniels were on full attack on my girls. I free-range, so they had many to choose from. I was in town, & when I pulled into my drive, the dogs had been having plenty of fun. They killed 6 of my pullets & 1 of my goslings. 6 of my older girls were injured, but none as bad as Bianca. Her back, both of her back legs & her part of her vent had been chewed down to the muscle. You could distinctly see her tendons in her legs. Surprisingly, when we found her, she came walking up like nothing had happened. My stomach turned when I saw her. I just knew she couldnt survive this. My father came out, looked at her & said, well do the best we can. I asked him if we should just cull her. He told me not to give up on her so easy. So we washed her wounds with betadine, slathered neosporin on her & isolated her. The next several days, I waited to find her dead. Several times a day, we cleansed her wounds, treated them with neosporin & anti-pick lotion. Every day, I just knew I would find her dead, & every day she proved me wrong. It is now almost 2 months since the attack & Bianca is fully healed, although her feathers that grew in are now black & white. I just think it gives her more character. Dont under estimate a creatures will to survive. They are MUCH stronger than we give them credit for.
