I see a lot of people post things, such as, Yes, I beat my kids! and they mention this not to come off as abusive, but with the intention to claim that they discipline their kids with the rod, so-to-speak. And you know what? Ill say like my mother says, Cada quien, which mean, To each his own. But with that said, Ill also share my personal view on it, included with my own experience of it: I grew up with a parent who also believed in disciplining her kids with the rod, and she did so every time she didnt like something, and it even got to the point where even a simple sound would trigger her to use the rod. And you know what I saw in her eyes? Hatred... tons of it! After many years of this habit of hers, so-called discipline I also began to become like her; reacting violently every time something ticked me off. Eh, Im 29 now, thats been years ago, but you know what? I still have the tendency to react violently to ANYTHING that bothers me, and it takes so much self-control to NOT react the way I was TRAINED/TAUGHT to react... A lot of people tell me, Maybe she beat your ass from getting into trouble! But disagree, because every time I got in trouble it was due to me reacting violently to some petty bullshit... it was all I knew how to do, all I ever learned! Her so-called discipline taught me 2 things: (1) FEAR; to surrender & be afraid of authority. 2) HATE; gather all the hatred given to me by authority & use it against someone without authority; someone who cant defend themselves; someone voiceless; bullying. I see a lot of people say, Oh, thats just because youre Mexican! But no, dont stereotype me, and dont say its part of my genetics, culture and/or nature to be violent! Its nobodys nature, its a teaching, and its been the cycle of many generations of my family, and it keeps being passed down, but I dont want to pass this down to my kid, which is why I would NEVER put a hand on her! I believe in discipline, yes, but beating on the love of my life isnt discipline, its ignorant, its primitive, and its due to lacking the education & lessons required to sit a child down, and teaching her/him responsibility, consequences, to appreciate, value, and giving her/him the guidance required to transform a child into a respectable & responsible person. by Ricardo Ignacio
