I see a settlement has been announced regarding the pumping of groundwater under a building into the Chain of Lakes. It appears that the sole concern being discussed is the phosphorus content of the discharged water. Seems to me thats an issue, but far from the only one. I saw some data which made me question whether it was actually groundwater being analyzed. For instance, the turbidity was significant, and this is not really typical of groundwater, which is usually effectively sand filtered. Thermal effects apparently have been significant enough for the City to have extended the outfall pipe. People are typically not aware of the extent of seasonal exchange between ground and surface waters. I wonder if the City of Minneapolis is in possession of a comprehensive study of the hydrology of the lakes. If not, it needs one.
