I see people inquiring about window channels and where to buy it - TopicsExpress

I see people inquiring about window channels and where to buy it all the time. This is what I do. I take an 8 ft 2x4 of Douglas Fir and rip it into 3 pieces, 1 x 1 1/2. Then I either double 2 rip blades or set up my dado blades to cut a 1/4 wide groove 1/2 deep. (For 3/16 glass or Plexiglass.) Then set the fence at 7/8 and run each lower board through on both sides. Then raise the blade up to 3/4 out of the table and run the upper boards through on both sides. You need deeper grooves in the upper channel to facilitate being able to install the glass and remove it. So an 8 - 2x4 ripped to 3 pieces of 1 x 1 1/2 = 24 feet of double groove channel for $2.39. Thats 10 cents a foot. You should wind up with 3/8 shoulders on each side, 1/4 wide grooves and a 1/4 wide wall between the grooves. 1/2 deep for the bottom rail and 3/4 deep for the upper. For 1/4 glass rip 3/8 grooves and only 1/4 shoulders. But maintain the 1/4 wall between the grooves. Hope this helps save you all some money and helps finish a few projects held up because of track.
