I see that because were in the middle of an election, every elected official and candidate in Texas today is throwing the Happy Texas Independence Day! stuff out there. And, as usual, the rest of the nation/world continues to ask why Texas stint as an independent nation is such a big deal. So please, let me explain it to you: It absolutely isnt a big deal at all. In fact, the Republic of Texas lasted less than a decade, barely a blip on a historical timeline. The Republic was completely incapable of keeping law and order, its borders were never really set, and it went into massive debt in a relatively short period. Few foreign powers even recognized it as a nation (and even then, that was because they had something to gain from it.) Most Texians, especially Sam Houstons faction, were well aware that independence was merely a necessary step to be annexed by the United States. And because they were afraid of Mexico actually waging a real fight this time around, Texas begged the United States to let them in before the Mexican–American War. Quite literally, the Republic of Texas would make Somalia look stable and prosperous by comparison, and its not really worthy of anyones pride. P.S. Theres nothing more Texan than iconoclasm, so dont take it personally, folks.
