I see that some mischievous Nigerians have been masturbating over a purported request by Nigeria for Ghana to supply its excess electricity to Nigeria. First of, there was never an official request to Ghana to supply its excess supplies to Nigeria as what transpired was a statement of intent made by the Ghanaian President, John Mahama at the Africa Global Business and Economic Forum meeting in Dubai where he stated that: “We have given priority to electricity generation in our country. We have prioritized energy in such a way that we want to become the hub for power production in West Africa. We want to generate electricity to the point that excess power can be exported to Nigeria, Ivory Coast and other countries that have power deficit”. The present total installed capacity in Ghana is 2,846.5 mega watts which is hardly enough to feed the whole of Ghana not to talk of having excess to export. Ghana plans to increase its capacity to 5,000 mega watts by 2015 whereas Nigeria that is already generating between 4,000 to 5,000 mega watts plans on increasing same to 10,000 mega watts by December 2014. These are all statements of intent by both the Ghanaian and Nigerian governments so lets us not act like Ghana has already translated intention into reality. #StophatingonyourcountryNigerians.
