I sent in a letter of official resignation from a Big Bank today. I sent the letter to EVERYBODY THERE. An excerpt and responses, below. (Edited): ------------------------------------------------------------------ Hi _______, Im sure you are aware, but I wanted you to have an official letter from me that I am resigning from ________, effective immediately. As far as the rest of my letter, I would appreciate you sharing it with your superiors, or whomever else you deem appropriate. If it matters, Id like to say that this move is nothing personal against _______, I was just offered a second job by the DoJ with benefits that were just too good to deny. I respect what ______ is trying to accomplish, and if it werent for the extended benefits program (I have a son to think about), I would still be at the ______ office at Metrotech now. Ive told my colleagues working for you at Metrotech that _______ presents long-term opportunities for those who can perform well, and I believe that. Allow me to say a word about them (my former colleagues): I was immediately impressed, upon starting work for ________, at the caliber of people hired by __________ to be on my team, and on the waves after. One of them has been in securities litigation for over 12 years. Another was a trader on wall street. One female attorney in Wave 3 had the rare experience of opening an office in India for an insurance company. All of them are well-travelled, and life-experienced. These are extremely qualified and largely intelligent people with varied backgrounds. It is my belief that these people are _______s greatest asset. As such, I implore you to treat them like you value them (hint hint: COMPENSATION). Because many of them you are very lucky to have, in my humble opinion. Of the team that was hired with me, roughly 50% have already abandoned ship. Some without another solid offer like the one I have. But the economy is coming back for lawyers, and attrition at our level at _______ will not get better by itself. I think this presents an opportunity for ______ to turn things around before it becomes a problem you cannot continue to ignore. You can start by talking and listening, to your employees on the front line. I greatly appreciate the opportunity given to me by _______. This is just my two cents. I wish you all the best. With Warm Regards, -Jamal C. Wright -------------------------- Responses from former coworkers: My Direct Supervisor: This is a very warm and sincere letter. A lot of thought went into it and I have a lot of respect for you because of this letter. Your point about compensation is spot on. Thank you for recognizing and letting Holly know that we have a talented crew. I would look forward to Lunch/Dinner, anytime. Should you hear of any opportunities for lawyers let me know. Looking forward to meeting and talking to you. Truly, ____________. Colleague: Wow! That is fantastic! __________. ------------------------------------------------------ Im sure there are more responses to come. I hope my note creates a positive response.
