I shouldve write this post long ago - but here we go. Around a year ago my friend Genia Odesser and I quite suddenly decided to translate a documentary United in Anger. A History of Act Up unitedinanger/ We had a private screening at our place - and this film - it was a complete shock, revelation, eye-opener! Im writing this text now and constantly deleting it because I just cannot find the precise words to express everything I feel about it. There are so many levels: the movement itself, the actions - so bright and crazy, and courageous, and furious, and heart-breaking. The structure, how brilliantly it was organised, the strategies! The idea of not allowing media to speak for you - that you should create your own media and have your own voice be heard, not allowing to being present as a victim, but sculpting your own messages. That fight is not only on the streets but also in education, and in self-education! Relationship between art and activism. And above all - compassion and solidarity. Yes, this film is first of all about AIDS movement, LGBT movement, but its message is much broader, it appeals to just everyone. Well, the only thing I can say - watch it and then watch it again! (I personally think that this movie should be shown in every cinema instead of blockbusters, but Im not sure that anybody will follow my advice))) So after the screening - the same evening - we decided to translate it. It was easy to say - not so easy to do, combining with opera and family, but Im not regretting any minute of it - I learned so much! And I have to thank all my English-speaking friends Kathleen Kelly, Jennifer Condon, Becca Jo Loeb, Thomas Florio, Julian Black whom I tortured so much with my weird questions (you know what I mean))) and who spend their time explaining to me all the meanings and shades of English I needed! This Sunday this film will be officially presented in Moscow at Media Impact festival (it is even in the framework of Moscow Biennale). Both authors of this film will be present there and Im sure there will be amazing discussion afterwards. Im very sad I cannot personally be in Moscow, see reaction of people, hear their question but nonetheless this will be very-very-very special day for me.
