I showed this in my sociology of mental illness class yesterday. I think its a fascinating example of the difference between ideal and real culture. Mr. Rogers is talking about ideals that we as Americans profess to be very important to our freedom, individuality, and pursuit of happiness. At the same time, hes talking about a level of freedom that much of our society just wont tolerate. Children quickly learn that if they grow the wrong ideas in the garden of their mind, they will be punished. Its not rewarded in society to be curious about many things, at least not too curious, and especially not about the wrong things. And I like Mr. Rogers.
