I spent a few hours this morning in front of a Walmart (as part of a Black Friday protest group), telling shoppers about the miserably low wages that gazillionaire company pays, and how people all over the nation were boycotting Walmart today to draw attention to how they let public programs (like food stamps) care for the workers they employ rather than offering fair wages and benefits. I was positioned in clear view of a giant cereal display during that time and emerged from the experience with a deep yearning for Lucky Charms, one of the cereals on display. Ive not eaten that in decades. And people say they shop with free will. No. Advertising constructs our desires. I still have the magically delicious jingle in my head...
