I spent much of last weekend (at the USA Science & Engineering Festival) helping people understand (and overcome) the truth about spiders. I was often overhead saying (because I was usually shouting it) The Drama Fest is down the block... this is the SCIENCE Fest! But the point might have been missed... you dont have to like spiders because I like spiders and yell at you until you like them so i leave you alone. But, since in the grand scheme of things they are virtually harmless to you and your relations, if you are able to bring yourself to look at them without the societal emotions they are burdened with, you will see a window into how AMAZINGLY cool and intricate and sophisticated and entertaining and informative **your world** is. Here is an excellent example! Spiders have six or eight eyes in various designs! They are classified to some extent by their eye arrangements. This chart shows the whole story and is really great! But heres the thing. It isnt just that their eyes come in all these different arrangements on their heads, its that they are arranged differently *because* of the different habitats and life histories the particular group has - if you hunt by sight, your eyes are more important than if you hunt at night by feel or with a big orb web. Look at this chart, check out the eye arrangement, and *guess* where/how the spider lives - then look it up and see if youre right! Think like a spider!! (and, please phrase your responses in the form of a question - that way you will always be able to learn more!!)
