I spent the past two days in Oslo, where an international conference was organised to mark the centennial of womens suffrage in Norway. I gave a keynote speech on the impact of the global financial crisis on women and girls, and, looking to the future, on what could be done to make women and girls less vulnerable to such crises in future. Gender inequality lies at the heart of the disproportionate impact of crises on women and girls. Among the disturbing and disproportionate impacts, its been calculated that a one per cent decline in GDP per capita increases average infant girls mortality by 7.4 deaths per 1,000 live births - the figure for infant boys is much smaller at 1.5 deaths per 1,000 live births. Knowledge of impacts like these can motivate us all to work even harder for gender equality and the full empowerment of women and girls. undp.org/content/undp/en/home/presscenter/speeches/2013/11/15/helen-clark-speech-at-the-international-conference-celebrating-the-centenary-of-women-s-right-to-vote-in-norway-/
