I spoke to a young Ukrainian man on the bus this morning. Hed arrived in the States for the first time ever only a few hours earlier. He asked where I was from. I told him, Columbus, Ohio. Later, he asked who my favorite new-hull (how he pronounced NHL) team was. I said, The Columbus Blue Jackets. He silently reflected for a moment. Then, his eyes lit up and he said, Ahhhhh yes . . . your motherland! I wanted to share because this interaction made my day, and also because I think when people ask where Im from now, Ill say, My motherland is Columbus, Ohio.
