I started the 4th with a walk on Nesika Beach (by the restop) tagging along with my friend Rebecca Carlson. She volunteers to walk her assigned mile appointed by the Marine Management Wildlife Center under the direction of Jim Rice. Within the first 5 minutes we found a dead stellar sea lion with 3 shot gun wounds (see photos) and a seal pup thats mom had left on the shore to go feed. Moms do that, go and feed to come back at night to retrieve them. NOTE: shell spy hop to check on the pup periodically and if she sees people or smells dogs she will likely abandon it to die. Before we.could get to it, there were a group of people poking it with a stick and holding its head up for a picture (also see pictures) We spent the next 6 hours keeping ignorant people away and encouraging it towards the water. The entire time Rebecca was in contact with Jim Rice asking for assistance but to no avail. HERE IS MY POINT - I have been a fisherman, including commercial fishing all of my life. Ive had salmon ripped off of my line by seal lions right in front of me but my thinking has always been...WHO WAS HERE FIRST? There has been a statute in Oregon/Washington since 2002 that seal lions can be killed, even though theyre endangered. But because theyre eating Chinook which are also listed as endangered this was the mandate. Since that time they now brutually brand them and move them or herd them up and shoot them. This is ok why? There have been 70+ killed.and theyre planning to expand the program next year. For all of.my CA friends accustomed to Marine Wildlife Rescues... we have NONE out here in OR so these creatures are left to fend for themselves. Its disgusting and archaic. But if youre caught touching one trying to help one. .. BAM, theyre Jonny on the spot to issue you a $10,000 fine. OREGON/WASHINGTON, GET IT TOGETHER :( THIS IS CRAP AND THERE HAS TO BE A BETTER WAY THAN THIS ANIMAL CRUELTY. Any input, good or bad, would be appreciated.
