I still remember his first trip to Mexico. I was a little girl - TopicsExpress

I still remember his first trip to Mexico. I was a little girl when I joined my family standing in the balcony of my cousins grandparents house on the main Avenue where the Pope was going to pass by in the Pope-movil. The crowds around us as far as the eye could see, united in song and prayer! The offices closed, the schools closed... I guess they knew it was useless to open because everybody was going to be on the streets waiting for the Pope. It was truly a day of celebration! Then, as his vehicle approached down the avenue, I saw him there, standing up in the Pope-movil looking at the people on the streets and giving them his blessing. I remember calling out his name and waving at him. He looked up and smiled and he blessed us! I was so young, and yet I knew that I was witnessing something great. I cried of joy and laughed because the Pope had heard my voice and looked up at the balcony. The entire city kept telling him: No te vayas, Papa! Quédate en México! Dont leave, Pope! Stay in Mexico!. Musical groups and choirs would gather late at night by the place where he was staying and he would come out smiling and speaking in Spanish saying: Children, children, your Father needs to sleep! and the people would yell back: One more song, Papa! Stay with us! The day he left Mexico City, we all knew at what time his plane was leaving, and people went to their windows with mirrors in their hands to wave good-bye. I remember watching the news that night, and seeing the spectacle from the Popes window. The city was shining with millions of twinkling stars! and we were crying because he had left us. He came back to Mexico several times. He loved our Lady of Guadalupe. He named the Indian Juan Diego a Saint. He spoke to us in Spanish and said: My children, remember, I am El Papa Mexicano. He truly is a Saint. And I am so fortunate to have witnessed all these things and to have received his blessing when he looked up at the balcony where the noisy little girl was calling his name and telling him she loved him. San Juan Pablo II, pray for us. Amen.
