I still wonder whether the contemporary Nigerian army is still the same army that was once tagged the best in Africa, considering their powerlessness in the face of Boko Haram brigandage in the North-Eastern part of Nigeria;whether this same Nigerian Army was not the same army that was drafted to Sierra Leone about twelve years ago when it become obvious that the Sierra Leonian Armed Forces could not confront the rag-tag RUF rebels led by Mr Fodey Sankoh who had held Sierra Leone by the jugular by performing the worse acts of barbarism on innocent citizens;whether it is not the same Nigerian Army that was sent to the Republic of Liberia when it became a known fact that the administration of Mr Charles Taylor was having its coup de grace in the hands of the LURD rebels led by Mr Sekou Demate Konne,or even the same Nigerian army that fought in Lebanon, the Congo and Mali.Of course, this same Army had performed wonderfully well in these countries that they earned Medals for their acts of exemplary bravery. It therefore leaves me with a profound mood of melancholy whenever I wake up to hear the news of another Boko Haram onslaught on a sleepy North-Eastern Nigerian village ,during which they leave sorrows and blood in their wake.Where is this same Army that was once the pride of Africa;where is General Aguiyi-Ironsi of Congo, where is General Maxwell Kolbe of Sierra Leone;where is General Obiakor of Liberia;where is General Muhammadu Buhari of the Nigerias Armoured Division;where is Colonel Chris Ugokwe, the young army officer who drove the 1976 coup plotters out of Lagos or even the oxford-trained General Odumegwu Ojukwu, the 32- year old soldier who had left many mouths agape for almost 3 years during the Nigeria civil war.Of course these old-soldiers should come and salvage what is left of this once-glorious institution. The time to act is now!
