I strongly disagree that the Manson murders killed the 60s. COINTELPRO, and serious backlash to the CR Movement, the Black Power/Black Arts Movement, among other manifestions of freedom movements and the fear of real change TRIED to kill the 60s. Once an idea is born in the minds of people, there aint enough bullets in the world to kill it. Movements have their peaks, change, morph, develop and continue to coalesce and blossom. What I find interesting is that Mansons insane ass wanted to incite a race war. He tried to frame blacks for the murders (his own admission). Instead of looking at the foundational tribulations he suffered (absent dad, disowned by his mom, being poor and discarded by a system) this 52 antisocial career criminal (no so) cleverly tried to construct a race war. Go figure.
