I stumbled across an interesting video today. It consists of a simple question addressed to hundreds of celebrities. The question is this: Lennon or McCartney? Simple, right? Not really. Strawberry Fields Forever? Eleanor Rigby? Tomorrow Never Knows? Blackbird? Ticket to Ride? Yesterday? Are you a supporter of the cultural revolutionary who focused on introspective and game-changing experimentation? OR, are you a supporter of the man who was a master of melody, hooks, and overall poptimism? It’s the arty vs. the mainstream. It’s cool vs. uncool. It’s thought vs. earworm. Obviously, both artists held all of these qualities to some degree, and both artists made each other better. It’s also clear that the combination of the two different worlds is the Beatles’ magic formula. Just listen to “A Day in the Life!” It’s both aspects, not just one, that bring listeners back, decade after decade. This means that the best answer is Lennon AND McCartney. But if you have to choose one, which one is it? When you listen to Revolver, do you skip to “For No One” or do you skip to “She Said She Said?” I slightly lean towards all things melodic. Mark me down for McCartney.
