I stumbled across the most fantastic church today. Never heard of it before, and I doubt many outsiders have ever visited it. It took an hour to locate the elusive key-person, but growing numbers of woman worshippers gathering outside, including the elderly nun depicted, who told me there are some old paintings inside, made me think it might be worth the wait. Finally I got access, and the interior was covered in hundreds of paintings top to bottom. The priest said the church is from the 13th century, the paintings are from the 19th (but they have obviously been touched up and elaborated upon more recently). Whatever, they are very impressive! A few pics... and for further details, my marketing guru would like to advise that all will revealed in the next edition of the Bradt Guide to Ethiopia ;)
