I support the promotion and awareness on mental health, but this - TopicsExpress

I support the promotion and awareness on mental health, but this study released by the American Psychiatric Association which links SELFIES to narcissism, addiction and mental illness is absolutely NUTS! London-based psychiatrist Dr. David Veal also made a conclusion that those who come to him with Body Dysmorphic Disorder have a compulsion to repeatedly take selfies and have a high chance of taking their lives. And there was just one case with attempted suicide in London, and yet he concludes that this is a mental health problem? We have different reasons for taking selfies: 1. no one is available to take your picture especially when you are traveling alone 2. you want to promote something or yourself to the public 3. you are in the company of celebrities, A-listers, etc., and you want to capture that once-in-a-lifetime moment 4. you are in an event or an interesting moment 5. you like how you look and you wanna show it to the public 6. it is the current craze and you want to join the bandwagon No matter what your reason is for taking selfies, it is unfair to conclude that those who take selfies, even when they are so frequent, should be on a mental health watch. These psychiatrists should research more and pool those scientific evidences before concluding that selfie is a disease or a disorder called SELFITIS.
