I suppose I should begrudgingly open my chapter and verse on the thorny topic of positivity (bah!), by thanking my sister Naoimh Penston for the nomination. How I can follow her own worthy deeds I do not know, but hey we’ll give it a try! Teeth gritted, here we go…. DAY ONE So….what is positivity, and where to start? God knows!!! IT DOESN’T HURT TO BE NICE Wouldn’t life be all the better, for everyone, if we all did our own little bit to be nicer; a smile costs nothing. Every single day of the week. It doesn’t have to be a forced effort of kindness either to curry favour with someone else, just a simple gesture of goodwill. Y’know…..in a world of increasingly less caring for one another: family, friends, or otherwise….not having the time for each other due to our hectic lifestyles (no laughing down the back, please!)…it’s always lovely – just lovely – to hear a young kid, in the shop, at the counter, minding their “p’s and q’s”. We can learn so much from the younger generations at times, and though it’s only a small thing, I like to commend all kids who are incredibly mannerly…..and (don’t tell me Dad!) I’d often chuck them a jelly or two as a way of ‘reward’ for their good manners. The flipside of course is screaming kids, driving a parent, notably “Mammy” up the proverbial wall……..and failing to understand that simplest of two letter words in the English language – “no”. You see it at supermarket checkouts, the kid screaming, wanting…..demanding…and the Mammy invariably giving in! So, I genuinely believe it is always a worthwhile exercise to complement our youngsters when they are mannerly. The term “random act of kindness” seems to have crept unsuspectingly into language over recent years, and used like a badge of honour. In reality, it should be the norm. With the town’s roads at the moment all dug up and as bumpy as a teenager’s landscaped visage with award winning acne, I’d like to see some common sense employed by us drivers…….don’t go blocking roundabouts……yield to allow traffic flow freely when you can. Smile at the twat behind you whose impatience should be rewarded with you allowing another car out onto the main thoroughfare. Hell no…..keep smiling and let them all out! That could be yourself on the South Quay the next day willing someone coming across the Nineteen Arches to yield and allow you out! So, smile. Be nice. Be selfless. It’ll cost you nothing. Doing the occasional bit of good for others often comes back at you. With interest. Karma, some might call it. I’ll deal with karma later into my seven day haven’t a clue where I’m going positivity challenge! But for now, it has been a long long day at work……and I’m going to end on a very positive note by reflecting on Liverpool’s latest defeat today in the footy! Seeing that shower getting twatted always did bring out a very VERY positive reaction with this Evertonian! Oh, I never felt more like singin the Blues, when Everton win and Liverpool lose......oh yeah, ygot me singin the Blues! ;-) Night folks, day two on the morrow….
