I sure remember the sketch, but it is a rewrite of history to claim it was the one to put SNL on the map. The buzz about the show began several weeks earlier, which was why I was home watching the night Pryor hosted. I heard about it from my friend, Tom Trickey, who said there was this show that had a sketch about how the more disgusting the name of a jelly, the better it tasted. This based on the idea that Schmuckers sounded obscene. So they were trying out names for jellies like Greasy Rectal Itch. I didnt know Pryor would be the guest host until I tuned in that night, and afterward am not sure we dissected that sketch as the pick of the litter. For those too young to have seen him during his prime, Pryor was a titan. IMHO, the edgiest sketch they ever did was Bill Murray doing an OpEd on weekend update about corporal punishment in the schools. If you saw it, you know what I am talking about. The mans eyes were glazed, and he was drooling at the end. Impossible they could get away with that today.
