I suspect our junior high years were tough times for the teachers who were trying to adapt to cultural changes. The White Album - so cool the group didnt even have to put their name on it - came out in November 1968, pre-Christmas in 7th grade. Section 7-C at Donnell is sitting in Mrs. Hubers English class when someone starts singing. In a weak attempt at embarrassing this student, Mrs. Huber calls him out and suggests he might like to come up front and sing for the whole class. Not embarrassed in the least, or at least not showing any embarrassment, he strolls to the front of the room and stands right under the picture of the Native American on horseback that so many 7th grade boys had tried their luck at hitting with paper spit wads blown through a hollow Bic pen body. He sings, and he sings rather well, Im so-o-o tired, and feeling so upset. Although Im so-o-o tired Ill have another cigarette. Although the class thinks its funny, Mrs. Huber does not, and makes him sit down. Student 1; Mrs. Huber 0. 8-A; Math teacher Mrs. Steck at least had a daughter a few years older than us, so she tried to be more with it and maybe understood us better than some of the other teachers. She acknowledged that we might be inclined to do some drumming, but would we please not do it on the desks. She preferred that we tap on our shoulders or legs. Another young thinker figured out he could tap on his shoulders fairly loudly with his hands as he would do the introduction to Birthday. Dvoo dvoo dvoo dvoo dvoo dvoooooo dv dvoomp. Whapawhapawhapa ... Meanwhile, on the jukebox - which we could play ONLY after everyone had been through the cafeteria line so the cafeteria workers could shut the doors to the line - was The Crazy World of Arthur Browns Fire and its spoken opening line which scared any right minded parent into believing it was the end of civilization as they knew it.
