I sympathize with Sheikh El-Zazacky of the Shiite Islamic sect who lost three of his children in Zaria yesterday in what Shiites are saying was an annual celebration. It is quite unfortunate. We must continue to tell the Nigerian government that Nigerians are free to demonstrate and to protest in this democratic setting. The government also has no rights to shoot at armless Nigerians no matter what. Our military men and women must be trained on this. They should be arrested and prosecuted when they commit crimes in uniforms or whatever. Wearing uniform doesnt make one above the law. However, the Shiite leadership knowing the condition we are today in this country should have taken permission from the appropriate government establishments for their own protection in case of anything instead of giving wrong signals and all that. They leadership ought to have known that such celebration/protest easily veer into mayhem. Religious leaders should please stop endangering their followers and stop seeing themselves as above the law or break the law. God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria. -George Onmonya Daniel.
