I think I figured out why I saw the movie, Gods Not Dead, the way I did. It is a challenging movie for Christians. Christians who go to see the movie will probably like it and come away with a challenge to be bolder in speaking of their faith. Thats great and a legitimate use of film. Over the past couple of years, however, I have started trying to listen through the ears of an unbeliever. I look critically at the church to see how we appear to nonbelievers. Ive taken a little flak for that, as it comes with the territory, but I have been in church my entire life and in ministry for 33 years. I may not be the smartest person in the church, but Im no novice either. Its easy to get lost in the Christian culture and completely become irrelevant to people outside the church. I get quite a lot of positive feedback from people who have left the church and from some who have never been part of the church. I get the most kickback from people who have deeply held convictions. If you are one of those, then I want you to know that when I post something that you disagree with, read it as my call to you to open your eyes to the way you appear to people outside the church. Open your ears to hear how you sound to an unbeliever. If they never understand you they will never want to be one of you.
