I think I have adjusted my thoughts on blanketing this winter. - TopicsExpress

I think I have adjusted my thoughts on blanketing this winter. Traditionally, I have been in the dont blanket camp, but as my herd starts to age, I worry more about the cold. Especially with some of the new evidence regarding the benefits of blanketing. And since I firmly believe horses are better off outside, I purchased insulated jackets for everyone, as well as coolers, which I have always had on hand and rain coats, which we have needed way more this season than I can remember. I now blanket when temps are likely to get down to the single digits, like last night. Not only do the horses seem plenty warm, they eat WAY less hay. Win-win, in my opinion, with the rising cost of hay! I thought this was an interesting article and I have always paid attention to my horses manner when putting a blanket on. Bogie, who is no longer with me was really clear about whether he wanted a blanket or not. My current herd seems happy either way. Its an interesting dilemma to me. Good discussion, in any case, given the short term forecast here in Vermont.
