I think Ive really learned that the most valuable virtue in any type of relationship isnt communication, or trust, or any of that shit. Its respect. If you dont respect someone, you cant love them properly. You wont communicate properly, and you wont meet their needs. This transcends romantic relationships, friendships, professional relationships, and family relationships. If you do not respect that person, or they dont respect you then all of the other virtues will not be met, or be met halfheartedly. Respect determines how to speak to each other, how you treat boundaries, and what you will and wont sacrifice for someone. Once respect is gone, everything else will follow right behind it. Its true you can respect people you dont love, or even despise. But you cant love someone you dont respect. You cant really care about someone you dont respect. You cant give them much of anything but a giant bowl of shit.
