I think Mexico today is different from the Mexico of 2000 and - TopicsExpress

I think Mexico today is different from the Mexico of 2000 and different from the Mexico of 1994. As against some who believe that past remains prologue, I believe there have been inroads in breaking the monopoly power that has predominated across Mexicos institutions - corporate, government, educational, and labor - since the 1960s and before. But government abrogates its trust when it does not protect its citizens, and when it does not take more seriously the plight of millions of citizens who suffer everyday from poverty, crime, and institutional inertia. Today I stand with the peoples of Mexico who continue to call for change, with hope for a return to los anos utopicos of the 20s and 30s, when government gave land back to a third of the citizens, invested petroleum reserves to create universities, and established the rural normal academies that helped to create a public school system across the expanse of the nation. We are all Ayotzinapa, just as we are all Ferguson, in Mexico and the US, for as long as it takes to make good on the promises of government to the peoples of our continent.
