I think a whole bunch of people jump to crying foul when someone acts disrespectfully towards the national flag. My own view on that is that I consider such codes of conduct rather silly since respect is best demonstrated through conduct and not symbolism. But since we do have a formal code, thought it strange both the Defense Minister and the Prime Minister of India broke the code and saluted the flag. I believe the rule is you need to be in the uniform to salute the flag during the national anthem, else the correct stance is just being in attention. I imagine the President of India is the exception because he is allowed to salute it being the civilian commander in chief of armed forces who never wears the uniform.
