I think it is very important that the public understand why the decision was made not to reduce or increase the LPT tonight.. A 15% reduction would save the average Waterford household 65 cents per week, however the cost to the council of reducing it by 15% as proposed by SF would cost 1.4million. In other words we would have to cut services such as disabled persons grants, housing maintenance, public spaces, roads etc., by 1.4m or increase charges on business through commercial rates or parking to the same value - this is something I would not support! Its simple maths - one SF councillor even said it would be unfair to ask us to balance the budget.. Well that is the primary role of a councillor, its easy to be populist, not put forward any alternatives & expect others to make all the decisions!
