I think of today and I of course remember the particulars of where - TopicsExpress

I think of today and I of course remember the particulars of where I was when it happened, where I was when the towers fell. I remember how I felt, the fear and raw, directionless anger. I remember promising myself to join the military, to at least help in that revenge. What I really learned has nothing to do with revenge, and a TON to do with service. I cannot possibly know what was going through the heads of the 343 of my brothers from FDNY as they ran in when all others fled, but I am damn sure they did as they felt was right. They owned their city and their districts because they served them and served them well. They will be cherished as heroes and martyrs for the cause of that beacon of America, and it is because of their service. I think where I am really going with this is that most Americans serve nobody but themselves and their families. Being a veteran and a public servant, I can tell you now that I care more about this country than I did 12 years ago today. I love this city more than words can describe. I feel a sense of ownership and protectiveness that I think too few understand. So few of us are veterans, teachers, nurses, police officers, public servants (include those in politics, too. like it or not, they have some skin in the game and are working to try to shape the world how they believe is best). A tragically low amount do things for charity, community improvement, or the service of their fellow man. Instead, we put a flag in our front yard and call ourselves patriots without sacrifice. Most people who self-identify as patriots , in my experience, not only have never served their fellow Americans, but even reject such a simple notion of paying their share to ensure our way of life. So, when we are coming across this dreadful day again and you are posting your statements about "Never Forget" or "Proud to be an American!", I ask you, do you serve this country, or do you expect it to serve you? Be good to each other. Take care of each other. Most importantly, protect your home, your city, your country. Own them, care for them, serve them as if they are as fragile as a newborn baby.
