I think there is a way of the intellect, a sense in which intellectual disciplines are moral disciplines [...] If I am learning, for instance, Russian, I am confronted by an authoritative structure which commands my respect. The task is difficult and the goal is distant and perhaps never entirely attainable. My work is a progressive revelation of something which exists independently of me. Attention is rewarded by a knowledge of reality. Love of Russian leads me away from myself towards something alien to me, something which my consciousness cannot take over, swallow up, deny or make unreal. The honesty and humility required of the student - not to pretend to know what one does not - is the preparation for the honesty and humility of the scholar who does not even feel tempted to suppress the fact that damns his theory [...] But apart from special contexts, studying is normally an exercise of virtue as well as of talent, and shows us a fundamental way in which virtue is related to the real world. 공부를 한다는 것은 善함을 향하여 가는 하나의 방법이다. 예를 들어 내가 러시아어를 배운다고 치자. 나는 배우는 자로서 그것의 권위를 존종할 수밖에 없다. 배우는 일은 어렵고 목표는 요원하고 어쩌면 영원히 달성하기 어려운 것 일 수 있다. 내 작업은 나를 초월하여 독자적으로 존재하는, 과정의 표현이다. 내 관심은 현실에 관한 지식으로써 보상받게 된다. 러시아어를 향한 나의 사랑은 나에게서 나를 他者에게로 이끌며 이는 내가 의식적으로 지배하거나 삼켜버리거나 부정할 수 없는 것이다. 학생에게서 요구되는 정직과 겸손-알지 못하는 것을 안다고 하지 않는 것-은 훗날 자신의 이론을 파괴할 수도 있는 사실을 무시하고픈 유혹조차도 느끼지 않을 훌륭한 지성인이 갖추게 될 정직과 겸손을 미리 준비하는 과정이다.
