I think weve finally gotten a handle on why the guys have been - TopicsExpress

I think weve finally gotten a handle on why the guys have been getting mucus-y poopy-butt every few days. Its been a mystery because none of Susies other kids have had it nor the ones shes sent to new homes. Weve never had anything like it before. The guys have no fever and theyre very active and otherwise healthy. Theyve had Marquise AND Dimethox 40% cocci treatments and theyve been dewormed. Nothing made a difference. So, weve been feeding them half store-bought full fat cow milk and half frozen Katy (goat) milk, hoping to transition to all cow milk until Katy freshens around March 24. For the past 6-7 years weve used store-bought, full fat cow milk instead of milk replacer when we didnt have goat milk available (adding a dash cream for lambs due to their higher dietary fat needs) because milk replacers cause so many dietary upsets. But, getting desperate, I figured wed try a quality milk replacer in case somehow the guys couldnt tolerate full fat, store-bought cow milk. All they carry in town specifically for kids is Sav-a-Kid and I wanted something better than that. I ended up ordering a package of Hoeggers Kid Stuff because it has added probiotics. It came yesterday, so I mixed up a batch of half milk replacer and half Katy milk. I was dubious be cause I *really* dont like milk replacers but the boys are perfectly okay today! Then it occurred to me that we bought most of the store-bought milk at Wal-Mart with the occasional gallon from a store in town and the gastric upsets seemed to coincide with using the Wal-Mart milk. Keep in mind, though, that Gimo, Gonzo, Iggy and Ozzy drank it with no problems. So I asked John what he thought and he said, You know, the Wal-Mart milk has been foamy when poured and its smelled different for the past month or so. Has something changed? We dont know! I have enough Hoegger milk replacer to last until Katy is back in production, so Ill be mixing it with decreasing amounts of Katy milk today and tomorrow (well run out of frozen Katy milk tomorrow), then theyll get straight replacer. Ill keep you posted.
