I thought I might retell an incident that happened years ago when - TopicsExpress

I thought I might retell an incident that happened years ago when I was a rookie Police Officer in a city just north of Sacramento. Our patrol cars were the 1969 Dodge Polara with the 440 magnum motor, and that car could fly! I was working the night shift that hot summer night and by this time in my patrol area everything had closed and was locked tight. I had looked the area over for a pop machine that was available but there were none to be found. The department had a hard and fast rule about discipline if you were caught out of your assigned patrol area. But I was thirsty. Then I heard on the radio, my adjoining beat officer, who was the Senior Officer on duty and the Patrol Sergeant both check out for breakfast at an eating spot on the other part of town. Nows my chance I thought, I can find a place , get a bottle and be back in my area and everything will be O. K. So I took off but soon came to a 4 way intersection were a 64 Chevy had just pulled up to the stop before me. I waited for him to go first and is seemed he wanted me to go first but I motioned him on as he was there first. I turned behind him, that is the direction I was going and noticed he had the trunk partially open with a large looking box in the trunk. I thought it was sad that he was moving this time of night (rookie remember). As I turned behind the Chevy it began to pick up speed and made its way onto a street that allowed more speed. Soon as I radioed dispatch I was yelling into the mike, we are on Percy doing over 100 MPH and soon I am on there again confused with my location as we raced through the migrant housing area and out into an barren wheat field the Chevy doing Brodys and my Dodge with its push bumper was right on the rear bumper. The Chevy managed to power out and speed back into town on the only highway that led to where many other Officers and Sheriffs were blocking the road. The chase was over. The Officers all greeted the driver with guns drawn and instantly had him in handcuffs. I was still in awe of the speed chase and why did he think he could outrun me? Then up came the trunk lid and one scared young man who had the job of holding that lid down so we would not see the SAFE they were hauling off from the burglary they had just committed. In the car was the goods from several other burglaries they had done over the past couple of weeks. The Chief awarded me a letter of commendation for my alert Police work and ending the burglary ring that had plagued the city. I never told the Chief how I blindly fell into this one.
