I thought I would share with you one of the inspirational emails I received from a young Tongan woman currently residing in the USA - has to be shared! (i got her permission to share so please dont think I went ahead without her consent!) Malo e lelei Ofa My name is Melekasavu Latu I am 23 years old and I am from Mataika and Maufanga. I was raised here in the United States and just recently graduated from Johnson & Wales University in Miami Florida. While I was growing up my father put me into golf when I was 5. My father Sami Latu, played Rugby for Tonga during the 70s and my Uncles Sanitesi & Alipeti Latu were also prominent athletes as well. My father instilled in me at a very young age that the blood running through my veins were Tongan and that I am first and always a child of the Lord and second a child of Tonga. While I was playing golf in college my sister Etivise Latu told me of her dream of playing golf professionally under Tonga. From the moment she first shared her dream with me, I purchased and made that dream mine. When I finally gained the courage to tell my parents of my dream, they said no. My father told me of his hardships he had faced and told me it would be harder because I am a woman. I am in the process of becoming a citizen of Tonga and am working hard to qualify with my sister to become a member of the Tongan team and hopefully play in the South Pacific Games. My sister and I are fighting to have that opportunity to wear the Tongan flag proudly on our golf bags and we hope that if any woman or women out there in Tonga who is capable of the tasks at hand should also be given that opportunity to rise. Thank you for reading this email. I couldnt stop crying because I know how it feels to be told that you arent good enough, or you wont be able to handle it just because I am a girl; but I did, I have and I will continue to rise. I therefore am in FULL support of the petition below, Respectfully, Mele K. Latu Eiki Palemia ‘Akilisi Pohiva , 30 Tisema 2014 Talamonu atu ‘i ho lakanga fo’ou ko e Palemia ‘o Tonga 2015 - 2018.
