I thought Id post bit of a story about what made me decide to stick with cast iron, aside from growing up with it. Its a little gruesome, so READER DISCRETION ADVISED I used to work in a nursing home during the night shift and my charge nurse was short, plump, elderly woman. When things would slow down I would sit and chart next to her and she would tell me stories about when she was my age (18 at the time). The most influential story was about her first husband and why a smart woman will always have good cast iron skillets in her kitchen. Her first husband was an arranged marriage, intended to help her family financially. Unfortunately the man her parents picked out ended up being a drunk. One night he came home and started to beat her, she fought him away and swore to him that if he ever laid a hand on her again it would be the last. About a week later he came home drunk again and began to beat her, but she was able to get away and ran for the kitchen. She went straight to her stove and grabbed a skillet, as she turned around she face her husband and as he went for her throat she hit him across the head with as much strength as she had left. She got away and called the police, by the time they got there her husband had died from the blow. She was treated for her injuries and lived a long happy life, she passed away in 2010. After she told me this she gave me a bit of advice, Dont ever have kitchen utensils you cant defend yourself with, at the very least have one piece of cast iron P.S. after working in nursing homes Ive heard stories from dozens from elderly women that say they owe their lives to owning cast iron skillets.
