I thought that the second Thor movie was maybe the worst - TopicsExpress

I thought that the second Thor movie was maybe the worst Marvel/Disney movie, so far, but still very entertaining and watchable, which is the minimum I expect from these films. Theyre far better and more consistent than what has been done to the Marvel properties that are off with Sony and Fox (though, Lionsgates Punisher: War Zone was amazing). Further, the second Captain America movie has been, from a purely critical perspective, the best Marvel/Disney movie so far; I often tell people who havent seen it that its the Three Days of the Condor of super hero movies, owing far more to 1970s New American Cinema than to the 1990s Batman franchise. Further, I honestly doubt that its deft storytelling, as it was married to the spectacle, can be topped. It has been the first of these movies that is truly cinematic, in the classic sense, rather than an event movie. Now, I have some fears (none of them center of Guardians of the Galaxy, though). First, the shoehorning of Quicksilver and The Scarlet Witch into the next Avengers, combined with how absolutely shitty the set photos look, has put a fear into me that Avengers: Age of Ultron will be the first truly bad Marvel/Disney movie. Joss Whedon, despite his popularity, is kind of a hack. Hes an often fun and pleasing hack, but a hack none the less. Combine that with forcing in characters that are basically there for Marvel to use as parameters for a cold war with Fox and Sony over their wayward properties, and hints that Joss is being given liscense to return to his shittiest-yet-most-repeated trope -- the damaged beautiful young woman -- I am worried that its all going to come crashing down under the weight of its own convolution, Whedon fan service, and company drama. With Edgar Wright leaving over reported script changes, this furthers my feelings of dread over the future of the Marvel/Disney movie franchises. Wright is a true artist, whose movies -- whether you like them or not -- are made with so much attention paid to pace, narrative, and meta-detail that he could only make his kind of film without studio interference. Why his leaving doesnt bode well speaks to whether or not M/D can handle something being more art than product. Evidently, they cant. Thats a terrible indicator, especially after Iron Man 3 and the last Cap movie were given over to brave storytellers who seemed to actually get away with something.
