I took a break from the Phd diss work to write a statement about the painting I will have at the Cornell Gallery in the exhibition on Passenger pigeons, Moving Targets. I wrote: Researching the fate of Passenger pigeons and painting them in the molten medium of encaustics has intimately acquainted me with the once abundant lives of these birds. They are described as unspectacular but as I studied their small bodies in the vitrines of the Museum of Natural History, I was struck by their subtle coloring and elegant lines. I imagined their social lives in vast airborne avian cities. I mourned Marthas lonely last days. I think of all the animals humans have decimated, thoughtlessly, carelessly as fire shaped color on wood. When the wax congealed on the images on my panels, I thought I had painted and immortalized the grasses and geography of their vanished homes. I felt as though the long gone pigeons were using my hand to leave a last message, hear me. See me. Beware your future.
