I took some time off….from practicing, from posting on social media. And I’m ready to begin again. Some people scoff at New Years’ resolutions to get healthy. Constant memes online that joke about the parking lot of the gym being empty in December and packed in January. How most people resolve to lose weight, to get in shape, but then forget about all of it by March. Well I think it’s ok. I think our lives move in cycles. I’m sure life moves in cycles according to planets, or seasons, or hormones, and I don’t know much about all of that. But I do know that my life is always changing. So when I used to get frustrated about not “sticking to” an exercise routine, or a way of eating, or a particular type of yoga…..now I know it is part of how my life cycles. So I’m a bandwaggoner: I took time off my healthy way of life for the holidays. I ate and I drank and I was merry! And now it’s January, and I am back on track. But I don’t necessarily label it as my New Years’ Resolution; I find that it is my natural cycle. Sometimes we are highly motivated to move and eat “clean” and in those times, I find that it is very easy to get to class or the gym consistently. Sometimes, I am strongly drawn to the couch. And to a fancy cocktail. And I think the most important lesson I’ve learned is to listen to that voice too. Stop trying to force myself to workout when my body is craving rest. Stop feeling guilty about that. Instead, realize that I will find my way to an upswing of the cycle at some point. By laying the groundwork of a healthy lifestyle, I know that I will always come back to an upswing, and will always return to movement and good food. But life is too short to ignore the signs that are telling me to be lazy and enjoy that trashy tv show with a glass of wine. And if you need help laying that initial groundwork, the baseline to which you will always return, call me :)
